Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church  |  Staten Island, New York

This expansion made Our Lady Star of the Sea the largest Catholic building in its borough. While a small segment of the existing church (with a 500 – seat capacity) remained, the rest was demolished to make way for a new church structure to accommodate 1,100 congregants. Plans included retaining many elements from the old church to use in the new one. Several stained glass windows of saints, a baptismal font and the newly gilded cross on the building’s exterior were all part of the old structure. Four two–story stained glass windows are new, as are the custom light fixtures, custom precast paneling at the entry and marble finishes that adorn many areas. Throughout the church the Star of the Sea theme is evidenced through stars carved into the ends of the pews, etched in lighting fixtures and incorporated into woodwork on the new doors. More bathrooms, a larger “cry” room for restless children and a media center where an Internet link to Sunday masses is available were also constructed. Caldwell & Walsh worked with the parish, Archdiocese of New York, design team and local building department to ensure full compliance with building codes in order to have the building fully commissioned and ready for operation.
